Let’s talk about getting older. That’s no big deal if you’re 25, but how about if you’re a senior citizen? If you’re fortunate enough to achieve that status but you wonder what there is to do now that you don’t go to work any more and the kids, if you had any, have grown up. There’s an organization in town I’ve recently become familiar with called the Saskatoon Council on Aging, SCOA for short. I was surprised to learn about everything it does. SCOA is a community-based, not-for-profit organization and resource centre serving adults 55 and older and focused on meeting the needs of older adults living in Saskatoon and the surrounding area. It offers a range of courses, activities and services tailored to promote healthy aging. SCOA’s Mission is to promote the dignity, health and independence of older adults through education, programs, services and policy advocacy. There are programs to stay social, programs to learn technology, and various classes and events designed to help older adults stay sharp, find purpose and foster social connections. SCOA’s Vision is Positive Aging for all in an age-friendly community. The Saskatoon Council on Aging is a registered charity with a dedicated staff and volunteer Board of Directors from the community. Their office is located in the Saskatoon Fieldhouse. There is a website, scoa.ca. You can check it out and see what it’s all about in more detail than I have time to mention.
