The Pre evacuation alert is back in place for Candle Lake. Fire Chief Jim Arnold says in a news release that the pre-alert is being issued as a result of high winds and dry conditions that are advancing the “Camp” fire currently burning to the east of Candle Lake. These weather conditions are expected to continue over the next few days.
While there is no immediate danger, residents are being advised to stay alert and begin planning for a potential evacuation which could occur on short notice should the situation escalate. There is also an air quality advisory in place for Candle Lake.
In the latest situational update from the province there are 20 wildfires burning and nine are not contained. The wildfire west of La Ronge has resulted in the evacuation of the community of Hall Lake. The McIlveena Mine Site has been evacuated due to the “Wolf” fire near Denare Beach.
There has been an evacuation of a construction camp and evacuation alert issued for Pelican Narrows. The “Pelican 2” fire is burning northeast of Pelican Narrows.
The “Jaysmith” fire Northeast of Missinipe has prompted the evacuation of the community of Brabant Lake. Other communities that have been evacuated due to the “Shoe” fire which is now almost 25 thousand hectares in size include East Trout Lake, Lower Fishing Lakes and Piprell Lake; Little Bear Lake while the Community of Whiteswan/Whelan Bay is on pre-evacuation alert. Narrow Hills Provincial Park remains closed.
There have been 198 fires so far this year as compared to 164 at the same time last year. The five-year average is 123.
