After the community call to action to rename John A. MacDonald Road last year, the city of Saskatoon has developed and implemented a Place Identity Framework.
Director of Reconciliation, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, Stryker Calvez, says the framework will provide a guide for naming future streets, parks and buildings with names that bets represent the people that live in Saskatoon.
The framework will also be used to add secondary names to streets that already exist.
“We’re looking to do more adding than subtracting, so we’re looking at potentially adding names to it. So…just as an example, if we wanted to look at 22nd Street… Instead of changing the name, we might give it a symbolic name or a secondary name.”
He says there are currently no plans to permanently alter any additional street or park names in Saskatoon.
“Unless there’s another call by community to look at or consider something, we’ll probably just focus on names that need to be put in place and then look for opportunities where secondary names might add to another story or a context that will improve our understanding of what Saskatoon stands for.”
He adds that many other communities are implementing similar frameworks in an effort to be more intentional with how their streets and parks are named.
