Two men have been found and arrested in connection to a shooting on the Red Earth Cree Nation.
On May 17th, RCMP say their officers were called to a home on the Red Earth Cree nation around 5:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a shooting. At the scene, police found a male victim who was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. In a news release RCMP say their investigation shows two suspects entered the home and shot the victim before fleeing. In a search of the surrounding area, a knife and firearm, but the suspects had fled.
As a result of continued investigation, 38-year-old Gregory Whitehead and 40-year-old Harvey Whitehead, both from Red Earth Cree Nation, are each facing eight weapons related charges while Gregory Whitehead is also charged with one count of fail to comply with undertaking. Harvey Whitehead is also charged with an additional count of possession of a firearm while prohibited.
One of the men was arrested on Thursday on Red Earth Cree Nation. While being approached by an officer, he pointed a sawed-off firearm and fled into a nearby forested area. Officers located him and arrested him without incident before seizing a firearm and a can of bear spray.
The other man was arrested on Friday, also on the Cree nation. Gregory Whitehead and Harvey Whitehead are scheduled to appear in Melfort Provincial Court on Monday.
