The Saskatchewan All-Terrain Vehicle Association (SATVA) is reminding ATV riders, through their safety campaign, to “Ride Safe, Ride Smart”.
May long weekend is often the time when riders are eager to get out on the trails throughout the province.
SATVA recommends riders follow important safety tips which include:
- Don’t mix riding with alcohol or drugs: Operating an ATV while impaired is illegal and dangerous. Alcohol and drugs reduce coordination and impair judgment, leading to a higher risk of serious injury or death. Riders can face DUI charges even on private land.
- Wear the right gear: Always wear a helmet that meets safety standards, along with eye protection, gloves, ankle boots, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt.
- Avoid risky maneuvers: High speeds, stunts, and risky jumps may look cool in movies, but in real life, they often lead to serious injuries. Stick to posted speed limits and keep off roadways except when legally crossing.
- Plan ahead: Always let someone know where you’re riding and bring a cell phone and a basic first aid kit. Assess the terrain before you ride and never go beyond your comfort zone.
- Know the rules: Youth aged 12-15 and anyone without a driver’s license must either complete an approved ATV safety course or be supervised by someone who’s held a license for at least a year.
