A 44-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell at the Melfort RCMP Detachment late Tuesday afternoon and later died.
The man was arrested for disturbing the peace around 9:45am Tuesday after a window was broken at a home on Bemister Avenue West in Melfort.
He was transported to the RCMP detachment and then sent to hospital for assessment. A short time later officers went back to the Melfort Hospital following a report of a disturbance involving the man. He was brought back to the detachment cells around 10:45am. The man was found unresponsive in the cell at 5:10pm and died a short time later in hospital.
The man’s name has not been released.
The province’s Serious Incident Response Team will handle the investigation. The civilian-led organizations is called in when a person dies or is seriously hurt while in police custody.
