Saskatoon Fire Department is celebrating Emergency Preparedness Week between May 4th to May 10th; an event held annually in Canada. The theme this year is, “Be Prepared. Know Your Risks”. The event is held to raise awareness for Canadians to recognize that emergencies can happen at any time, and it is crucial to be prepared. The goal is to encourage Canadians to understand the potential risks in their area, be prepared for the unexpected so individuals can respond effectively and reduce risks that may result in injury or harm, potentially saving lives.
Regarding how an emergency can strike at any time, Director of Saskatoon Emergency Management Organization (EMO), Pamela Goulden-McLeod says, “Emergency Preparedness Week is a great opportunity to review your emergency plan, refresh your emergency kit and familiarize yourself with potential hazards in your community. Taking time to prepare for potential emergencies not only equips us individually, but also builds a stronger, more resilient community that can face challenges together.”
Saskatoon residents and businesses are encouraged to participate in Emergency Preparedness Week by doing the following:
-Know the risks to your home, business and while traveling, and how to respond,
-Make a plan tailored to your family and business or workplace,
-Get an emergency kit with basic supplies, in the event you need to get by without power or tap water, for a minimum of 72 hours,
-Follow trustworthy sources such as the City of Saskatoon, Saskatoon Fire Department, Saskatoon Police Service and Saskatoon Management,
-Sign up for “notifynow” messages as it sends public safety messages to Saskatoon residents via telephone, email or text message, with important information on what to do, where to go and what to expect when a public safety concern arises.
