Don Atchison is excited to share his ‘labour of love’ with the city from McNally Robinson on May 7th at 7:00 p.m. The book is called Building Bridges.
“We built three bridges in Saskatoon as the mayor. The building of bridges is exceedingly important to a community like Saskatoon, with the river running right through the heart of it but (the book is) also (about) being able to build relationships along the way.”
With chapters titled ‘Sports’, ‘Suits’, and ‘Announcing Canada’s Craziest Mayor’, Atchison says the book is mainly about the inner workings of City Hall, as well as what a career in politics entails for those thinking about entering one.
“People ask me if this is about all the skeletons in the closet at City Hall. The answer is no. I see nothing to gain from doing something like that.”
He adds that the city needs more people to put their name forward as politicians, so his book encourages the public to get involved.
“When I got involved in politics, I had no idea what to expect. I thought we would go down to City Hall on Monday night, we’d do some work there, we’d go to a community meeting once a week or whatever the case was, and that was it. But, once I got there, I could see that there was far more to it.”
He’s been working on the book since 2017 and says not even his children knew about the project until just a few weeks ago.
Atchison assures that the publisher is from Saskatchewan, and the book was printed in Canada. He will be launching the book from McNally Robinson on May 7th at 7:00 p.m. It will be available to purchase in-store, as well as online at Amazon.ca.
