It’s my Parting Shot for my reactions to the headlines in today’s Star-Phoenix Sports Section…..
First headline…No surprise Armstead cut by the Roughriders, Temperamental running back was not a good fit on team, writes Darrell Davis. My reaction…Here’s another case of what the fans see outside of the locker room and on the field as opposed to what happens inside the locker room, away from everyone – media included! “Rock” Armstead wore out his welcome in Ottawa and he did the same thing with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. It’s one thing as a professional athlete to know how good you are and what you are capable of and having self-confidence. It’s another to let all of that be known out of being upset with your use! The moral of the story is, not just in football, but all pro sports – shut your mouth and wait your turn! Or in “Rock” Armstead’s case – bye, bye Ryquell!!
Next headline…Penguins split with bench boss. Reaction…Pittsburgh fired the wrong guy! They’ll eventually realize that Kyle Dubas isn’t the right G-M for their team, since he’s new and deserves a chance to make his own coaching hire. Mike Sullivan was with the Pens for 10 years and won two Stanley Cups. But, Pittsburgh has missed the playoffs the last three years with Dubas in charge for the last two. Another bad season or two and Penguins’ ownership should have Dubas in their cross-hairs! Poor Sidney Crosby has to put up with that poop show!!
Last headline…Melfort Mustangs win consecutive titles, Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champs shut down Weyburn Red Wings. My reaction…That’s four S-J-H-L titles in a 12-year run as head coach for Trevor Blevins. He’s also the G-M – as most guys in the league handle the dual roles. My question – for a guy who will turn 50 in October and is a home-town Melfort guy – do you think about moving up the coaching ladder and try to make it to the big money at the pro level? Or, are you comfortable in your situation where you are? To me, with Blevins’ record and success, I’d be tempted to try my luck at the next level!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
