The Liberals have won a fourth straight mandate—but it will be a slim minority government.
As of midnight, the Liberals were elected or leading in 167 seats, the Conservatives had 145, the Bloc Quebecois 23, the NDP 7 and the Green Party won a single seat.
Prime Minister Mark Carney was the only major party leader to win his riding on election night. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh finished a distant third in his Burnaby, BC riding and told supporters that he would resign after a new NDP leader has been selected. While the Conservatives did well in many areas of the country, leader Pierre Poilievre was trailing the Liberal candidate in his Carelton riding in the Ottawa region. At last word, the vote difference was 31,110 to 29,347 with 242 of 266 polls reporting.
Saskatchewan remains solidly Conservative with 13 of 14 ridings colored blue. Kevin Waugh (Saskatoon-South), Brad Redekopp (Saskatoon-West), and Corey Tochor (Saskatoon-University) all retained their seats. The margin of victory was even larger in rural areas. The Liberals won a single seat in northern Saskatchewan. Former NDP MLA Buckley Belanger was the winner in Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River and will likely get a seat in the new federal cabinet.
The national popular vote was nearly too close to call with the Liberals less than half-a-percentage point ahead of the Conservatives. The Bloc Quebecois lost 10 seats in Quebec and the NDP vote collapsed across most of the country.
