The Grain Growers of Canada and the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) issued news releases congratulating Mark Carney on his election victory—but quickly provided a long list of issues they want the new Liberal government to address.
The Grain Growers of Canada wants a reversal of the proposed capital gains tax increase, permanently eliminate the carbon tax for all on-farm activities and to resolve growing trade uncertainty with the United States and China.
It is also urging the government to invest in trade-enabling infrastructure, improving transportation systems, modernize regulations, support plant breeding innovations and defend access to global markets through rule based trade.
A similar message to Prime Minister Carney is coming from the APAS, which also wants trade issues addressed and better transportation infrastructure. Specific priorities include increasing the Advance Payment Program interest-free limit, enhancing farm roll-over tax provisions to include extended family members and reintroducing the Accelerated Cost Allowance for equipment investment.
Kody Blois won his Nova Scotia seat and should continue on as Agriculture Minister. There were no Liberals MP’s elected from the rural areas of Western Canada. The only Liberal elected in Saskatchewan is from the far north.
