The decision to tear down the unused properties at 113 and 114 Seminary Crescent was made by the USASK Board of Governors on Wednesday.
A significant risk to public safety posed by the vacant buildings and the prohibitive cost of repair were cited as the main reasons for the decision.
Efforts to find a buyer for the 114 Seminary Crescent property have been unsuccessful for the past five years. The owner—the Lutheran Theological Seminary—supports the demolition.
There were more than 160 security calls made to the location last year. Meantime the 113 building is unusable due to flooding and a failure of the electrical transformer. It would cost between $55-million and $60-million to make the necessary repairs.
