This Friday will be one of our statutory holidays. Good Friday is a solemn holiday observed by Catholics and other Christians on the Friday before Easter to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus. I mention Catholics in particular as Christianity is the most adhered-to religion in Canada and the largest Christian denomination is Catholic with almost 11 million adherents as of the last census. Easter weekend is a lot more than the Easter Bunny and Easter Eggs, although I wonder how many of today’s youngsters understand the solemn meaning of Christ’s death and resurrection. Growing up Catholic, I remember Easter was a serious time, much moreso than Christmas. There was fasting and abstinence, and no meat was eaten on Good Friday. I mentioned the nearly 11 million Catholics in this country and there are almost 20 million Christians. However, Canada has a population of about 41 million meaning slightly more than half are non-Christians. About 5 million belong to other religions and at least a third of the population has no religious affiliation. However, I’ll bet that the more than half of the country that isn’t Christian but still gets Friday off with pay won’t complain about it. You might even find the Easter Bunny visiting many of their homes and hiding eggs for the children to find on Sunday, a key element of the Easter tradition. I’m not ashamed to admit each Easter I drop a big hint to my family that I wouldn’t mind receiving my traditional milk-chocolate bunny rabbit Sunday morning.
