A lengthy standoff at Parliament Hill’s East Block has ended after the arrest of a man who barricaded himself inside the building.
Saturday night on X, Ottawa Police wrote that “The barricaded man call at East Block has ended without incident. One man is in custody. The @ottawapolice criminal investigation is ongoing and an update will be provided in the morning. We thank the public for its cooperation.”
The incident started on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET, when East Block was put on lockdown.
In an X post from Ottawa Police, they shared that there was a large police presence in the area and East Block had been evacuated.
It added that there are no known injuries so far in this incident, and a robot was being used to address the situation at a closer reach.
Media outlets report that people inside the east block were asked by Parliamentary Protective Services to seek shelter in the nearest room, close and lock all doors, and hide.
Those walking and driving in the area were asked to take an alternate route to avoid the scene.
