Lawrence MacAulay is joining the long list of Liberal cabinet ministers not seeking re-election.
The 78-year-old made the announcement in his predominantly rural riding in eastern Prince Edward Island on Saturday.
MacAulay says he decided not to run in a 12th consecutive term before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced plans to resign.
MacAulay was first elected in 1998 and has served under six prime ministers. He was the federal Agriculture Minister from November 2015 to March 2019 when he was moved to Veteran Affairs in a cabinet shuffle. MacAulay returned to the agriculture portfolio in July 2023, replacing Marie-Claude Bibeau in a cabinet shuffle.
