Snow removal is 65 per cent complete across all Saskatoon neighborhoods.
General Manager of Transportation for the City, Terry Schmidt, anticipates that snow removal on all residential and industrial streets should be complete by this weekend.
He adds that over 100 centimetres of snow have fallen in the city so far this winter.
“There is a real challenge to find places to store the snow. To remove all the snow on the residential streets like we’ve done in the past, that’s a $10 million-$12 million cost to do that, and at the time of year we have now, that takes eight weeks to do. We wouldn’t even get around to completing the whole city prior to the spring melting the snow.”
Crews are working to make streets as wide as possible by removing all snow piles from parking lanes and boulevards. Schmidt says spring-like conditions have caused some localized flooding in several intersections, and that will be addressed in the coming days as well.
