It’s my Parting Shot for my reactions to the headlines in today’s Star-Phoenix Sports Section…..
First headline…Magnetic force, Hannah leads U of S Huskies in serve receptions and kills. My reaction…it’s playoff time on campus and I’m thrilled that the Saskatchewan women’s volleyball team is in the playoffs. One of my favourite people to run into and chat with, if I’m ever around the P-A-C, is their head coach Mark Dodds! Aside from having to tilt my head back to look up to him, Dodds is a wonderfully kind and well-spoken individual – the kind of qualities that I would imagine would mesh well with university age female volleyball players. Plus, his playing experience is second to none with Canada’s national men’s team! So, when it comes to women’s volleyball this weekend against Fraser Valley, go Huskies, go!!
Next headline…Jarvis joins Sens’ Tkachuk on documentary series. Reaction…Oh to be young, single and rich! Seth Jarvis is a W-H-L grad who played in Portland and is from Winnipeg and has become cause celeb in the Carolinas in general and in Raleigh specifically for his rambunctious style of play and ability to score goals on behalf of the N-H-L’s Hurricanes! In other words, Seth Jarvis isn’t likely going to want to leave that situation and come home to try and win a Stanley Cup with the Jets in a trade before the March 7th deadline!!
Last headline…Wins could boost British pubs. My reaction…it’s hard to imagine pubs in Britain needing any more help drawing in patrons, but if England and Wales can reach the Women’s European Championship semi-finals in July in Switzerland, the government is considering extending the hours pubs stay open for folks to watch while imbibing. Based on my personal experience, a way back in 1990 when I won a trip to London through a draw at the old Newsman’s Bonspiel, more affectionately known as the Boozeman’s Nonspiel, I quickly realized that if I wanted to have a chair and table to watch matches involving England or Scotland during the 1990 World Cup of Men’s Soccer, I needed to be there at least two hours before kickoff time! It was wall-to-wall, standing room only and there weren’t large screen televisions to watch! What a great atmosphere!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
