Two Saskatoon senior homes took part in the 16th Annual All Seniors Care Senior Games this week, a Canada-wide Olympic-style competition complete with opening and closing ceremonies and medals.
Health and Fitness Coordinator at Preston Park Two, Emma Grodecki, says alongside Preston Park One and Two, 26 other senior homes joined in the fun, as well.
Although they aren’t brake dancing or serving it up on the tennis court, the seniors competed in bingo, jeopardy, shuffleboard, bocce ball, ladder golf, and corn hole to name a few.
Grodecki says the oldest athlete taking part at her centre is 97-year-old Dick.
“He did corn hole, and he was hitting hole after hole after hole after hole, and he said he couldn’t even see the board. He said, ‘I think I must have gotten it in because you’re all cheering’, and we’re like yes, you absolutely did,” she laughed.
There was a national winner among the ranks at Preston Park Two. Seventy-three-year-old Brenda Schutz took the bronze in ladder golf.
“I just do it because it’s good. It’s good for the mind, and it’s good for laughs. Life is too short to sit around and mope.”
Her advice to everyone, young and old, is to keep active, as it’s good for your physical and mental health.
