It’s my Parting Shot for my reactions to the headlines in today’s Star-Phoenix Sports Section…..
First headline…Re-signing Sayles “incomplete” on Riders’ off-season to-do list, Keeping shutdown cornerback remains unfinished business for Green and White. My reaction…as you just heard on the sports report, Marcus Sayles was re-signed by Saskatchewan this morning – the fourth of 10 items on Taylor Shire’s list! Whether you believe signing Sayles was the fourth most important thing for G-M Jeremy O’Day to get done before free agency or more important than fourth or less important than fourth, the fact remains O’Day is getting things done! He can’t re-sign every veteran free agent, but signing some C-F-L veterans who have been released ahead of the free agency period – like Mike Rose along the D-line and Tommy Stevens as short-yardage quarterback – is good work! The only real thing left to do is to get an upgrade at kick returner as, unfortunately, Mario Alford is beyond his “best-before date!”
Next headline…Quick first U-S goalie to 400 wins. Reaction…I’ve always liked Jonathan Quick as a goaltender. Technically, he’s not a good example to follow. But, Quick is that, quick, when it comes to agility, athleticism and compete. Ultimately, for me, I don’t care how good you are technically – just stop that darn little, black disc more than 90 per cent of the time and you’ll backstop your team to wins more often than not!
Last headline…P-W-H-L’s fantasy camp makes dreams come true, Participants get up close and personal with all that is good about the league. My reaction…the P-W-H-L continues to do all the right things went it comes to keeping itself in the forefront of North American pro sports and marketing itself as a viable entertain option…especially for women with disposable income! But, the jury will still be out on the P-W-H-L, I feel, until they are able to successfully expand beyond the six teams they have right now!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
