Newcomers to Saskatoon have reported several challenges when it comes to settling down in their new city.

Jasmine Calix with Immigration Partnership Saskatoon says according to the 2021 census, 17.8 per cent of Saskatoon’s population is comprised of newcomers, which equates to 56,820 people.

She says that figure is always growing, which is why it’s important to cater to the needs of the newcomer population in the city.

Calix explains that it’s been hard for international credentialed immigrants to find jobs in their fields in Saskatoon. They’re also finding long wait times to get English language training, which is also postponing their entry into the job market.

These concerns and others will be shared Thursday evening, at Immigration Partnership Saskatoon’s annual community forum.

“We are looking for feedback from the community on what they would like to see. There will be facilitated sessions as well, where people can give feedback in certain areas on how we can make Saskatoon more welcoming to immigrants.”

Both those engaged in immigration work and those with lived experience are invited to attend the free event, and they’re encouraged to provide recommendations on how Saskatoon can be more welcoming to newcomers.

Those obstacles and suggestions will be converted into a report, which will be reviewed and implemented as resources allow.

Calix says this year’s forum will also shine a light on the organization’s achievements over the last five years, such as launching the Employment Resource Guide.
