A properly working furnace will vent the carbon monoxide out of your home. but older furnaces, or a furnace that isn’t working properly, can produce large amounts of carbon monoxide, or a leak in the venting system could lead the carbon monoxide into your home.
That explanation from Weyburn’s Fire Chief, Trent Lee.
He explains that the newer systems have the pipes going out the side of the home whereas the old ones are vented out through the roof on a stack system.
Lee says, when these pipes get frosted over, you can lightly knock off the ice or snow to ensure any carbon monoxide in the home can escape.
He also advises to keep your furnace from undo wear and tear by regularly replacing the filter.
Lee notes that a properly functioning furnace not only saves you having to replace it sooner, but it could also save your life by preventing a carbon monoxide leak.
