The NDP say the Saskatchewan Party government blocked an emergency motion from the official opposition to permanently cut the grocery tax.
In a news release the NDP suggests the government is out of touch with the cost-of-living pressures faced by families after Premier Scott Moe reportedly said in the legislature Thursday that the provincial government doesn’t tax groceries.
Shadow Minister of Finance Trent Wotherspoon says the Sask. Party government should know that food purchased by what he characterized as busy and working hard, are indeed taxed. The NDP is referring to items like muffins and granola bars, certain fruit juices, sandwiches, rotisserie chickens, hot ready-to-eat meals and more.
Ontario’s finance minister has announced the province will match a holiday tax break announced by the federal government, removing its provincial sales tax on the same items.
