The Moose Jaw Police Service (MJPS) has charged 26-year-old Tyler Cronan regarding a single vehicle rollover. The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is also investigating the actions of the police in regard to the accident last Thursday. Moose Jaw Police say Cronan has been charged with impaired driving causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and flight from police.
In a news release from SIRT it states Moose Jaw Police Service received a call at 11:42 p.m. about a silver Honda driving erratically and chasing the caller’s vehicle. The caller also indicated there had been a physical altercation prior to the vehicle following them. At 11:44 p.m. police received a second call regarding the same vehicle. Three minutes after that an officer in a marked police cruiser saw the vehicle in question going northbound on Main Street at a high rate of speed.
SIRT says the emergency equipment was activated and the officer turned to follow the vehicle northbound on Main Street and at 11:48 p.m. radioed that the silver Honda had crashed on Main Street. Paramedics pronounced one of the vehicle’s passengers, a 31 year old man, deceased at the scene. Two other people in the vehicle, the driver and another passenger were taken to hospital for treatment. SIRT’s investigation will examine the actions of police during this incident.
A final report will be issued to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending. SIRT’s mandate includes independently investigating incidents where an individual has died or suffered serious injury arising from the actions of on and off-duty police officers, or while in the custody of police. The Moose Jaw Police Service says they are cooperating fully with SIRT and will have no further comment on their investigation.
