If the trick-or-treaters at your door look a little old this Halloween, there’s a good chance they aren’t looking for candy.
For the 18th year, students from Saskatoon’s Bishop James Mahoney and St. Joseph high schools will be ‘Halloweening for Hunger’. Rachelle Kelln, a teacher at BJM, says kids will be going door to door collecting non-perishable food items that will be taken to the Saskatoon Food Bank.
Several neighborhoods included on the routes include Southerland, Erindale, Arbour Creek, Willow Grove, Brighton, Silverwood, Lawson Heights, River Heights, North Park, Martensville and Warman.
If you aren’t home this evening, but would still like to donate, you can leave your container of food on your porch or driveway, and it will get picked up.
“Students should have handed out flyers on their route. People can leave the donation on the front step with the little flyer stapled to the package, and the kids will pick it up no problem.”
St. Joseph High School will be collecting food tonight, with BJM making their rounds tomorrow evening
Kelln says the most sought-after items include baby formula, baby food, and all non-perishables.
She says last year, her students collected 17 thousand pounds of food. This year, they are hoping for more.
“They go out, they do their thing, and they come back, and they see how much of a change their cumulative effort can have in this city.”
