At 5 a.m. this morning word was the Saskatoon Fire Department has cleared the scene of a grass fire south of the city although a heavy smell of smoke is still in the air.
The Saskatoon Fire Department received a report of smoke showing south of the city Tuesday, around 3:37 p.m., off Highway 11 and West of Victor Road.
Arriving fire crews saw a field on fire and the fire had gotten into some brush. Crews ensured no occupants or structures were threatened and fire officials say the fire quickly spread to other sections of land with winds gusting up to 48 kilometres per hour. In addition to the Saskatoon Fire Department’s two tanker trucks, two brush trucks, three fire engines, the mobile command unit as well as the Battalion and Deputy Chief on scene, additional resources were requested from the Clavet Volunteer Fire Department.
The RCMP also advised that Victor Road was closed last night with emergency responders in the area fighting the grass fire.
