The Saskatoon Berries host the Swift Current 57s at Cairns Field in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, July 25, 2024
It may have been a sour start to their expansion W-C-B-L season for the Saskatoon Berries, but they have found the sweet spot – namely the playoffs.
A 9-3 victory Thursday over the Swift Current 57s, before 2,109 fans at Cairns Field propelled the Berries into the post-season with nine games remaining, despite losing their first five games. Saskatoon jumped out to a 5-o lead after two innings with only one hit, a three-run home run by designated hitter Bailyn Sorenson. The other four runs were scored by players who were walked by Swift Current starting, and losing, pitcher Justin Puello. From there, the Berries responded every time Swift Current scored with a run of their own in improving to 25-22 for the season, good for third place in the East Division. Wyatt Wiatrek pitched five solid innings for his fourth win. Saskatoon’s next action is Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon against the two-time defending league-champion Okotoks Dawgs.
