The offender was only referred to as Mr. L in court, as his full name was redacted for his victims’ safety. Mr. L is a 41-year-old male from a rural area in Saskatchewan, who owned a trucking business and lived on a farm. The man served six months in 2010 for the sexual assault of a ten-year-old girl.
He was sentenced for two instances in which he sexually assaulted his own daughter in 2020 and 2022. The girl was 13 years old at the time of the first incident, and 15 years old at the time of the second.
Curtis Wiebe, the regional Crown prosecutor for Swift Current stated the case reached the Crown office in 2022.
“The Crown had sought a sentence after conviction of between five and seven years, and defense had sought a sentence of less than four years,” stated Wiebe. “They were looking for a period in jail of two years followed by three years’ probation, and then there were also some ancillary orders.”
The ancillary orders force Mr. L to give a DNA sample, forfeit all firearms for ten years, and report to a Sex Offender Registry Office as directed, to maintain a record of his employment and whereabouts for the next 20 years.
The daughter’s victim impact statement revealed that her father’s actions had shattered her trust around males, gave her sleep problems, and drove her to self-harm. She stated she “never felt safe anywhere”, and that she had to barricade her bedroom door with her dresser so that she may feel “slightly safe enough to sleep”.
“The sentencing date wasn’t well attended,” said Wiebe. “There was somebody sitting there for the offender and afterwards the offender and that person embraced. Aside from that, there wasn’t much in the courtroom besides counsel and judge.”
Mr. L is now banned for life from public parks, daycares, schoolgrounds, playgrounds or public swimming areas where children under the age of 16 can be reasonably expected to be. By law, he will never be able to work in a position of trust or authority over any children under 16.
