In an effort to cut red tape for certain drone operators in Saskatoon, City Administration has proposed a Commercial Drone Permit Program.
City of Saskatoon General Manager Lynn Lacroix says currently, drone operators must re-apply for each new drone flight, filling out multiple verification documents at least two weeks in advance.
“The current two-week advanced notice for approval can create limitations for responses to business requests and emerging news stories.”
She adds that this process was both time consuming and repetitive for the applicant and City Administration.
With the new Commercial Drone Permit Program, operators would only require a one-time application that allows businesses and media outlets to fly at any time upon approval.
“This proposed program aims to simplify the application process, maintain compliance with federal regulations and the city bylaw. It will also help foster a more positive and efficient use of drone technology within Saskatoon.”
Lacroix explains that non-commercial drone operators will still have to utilize the existing application and approval process. The program still requires approval from City Council prior to implementation.
