In an update from North Battleford fire officials, a news release issued Tuesday says the remains of a deceased person were discovered on the premises of a three-alarm fire that occurred on the weekend.
The North Battleford Fire Department was called out to 952-105th Street just before 8 p.m. on Saturday. The structure is considered a total loss. A male occupant of the home was transported to the hospital for medical treatment of minor cuts and lacerations from glass when he jumped from a second-floor window.
The scene of the fire was a location cited in the agreed-upon-statement of facts presented in the Tiki Laverdiere homicide. On May 1st, 2019, Tiki Laverdiere was confronted by Soaring Eagle Whitstone while at 952-105th Street and assaulted by several individuals. She is moved to another home barefoot, bound and bloody, where she is continuously assaulted. She is moved to a third home where the beatings and torture in a basement continue until she is lit on fire while alive. Her throat is cut and upon her death she is moved, wrapped in a rug. Her body was dumped in a slough outside North Battleford where, after death, she is shot. Her remains are found several months later and 10 people were convicted in her killing.
The North Battleford Fire Department says the identity of the deceased has not been released and the fire remains undetermined. The Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service is conducting an autopsy to try to identify the deceased and determine the cause of death.
A news release from Battlefords RCMP says they continue to monitor and if the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency or the Coroners Service determine there is criminality involved in the fire, the RCMP will take over that portion of the investigation.
