The prefix “pre” means before and “post” means after. To put them together would be preposterous. Take the words “new” and “retro”, put them together and what do you get: “Newtro” meaning modernized retro. Its beginnings can be traced back to 2018 in South Korea where Newtro was an amalgamation of trends of the modern era with that of the 1980’s and 1990’s. Now some would say retro stands for going back further. 1970’s, 60’s, 50’s. I did read where across the world young generations are rediscovering past decades in a quest to find an antidote to fast-paced, digitally-dominated modern life. Does anyone have a “dumb phone”, featurephones whose functions are limited compared to smartphones? Most dumb phones lack internet connectivity and social media apps with their constant barrage of notifications. It’s a phone, and you can text and take pictures. I saw one that looks just like my 1990’s flip-phone. I got my first cell phone in 1993. It only had 20 minutes of talk time and 45 minutes of standby time so you kept conversations short, but 31 years ago I felt a whole new world had opened for communicating. Will dumb phones become a big thing in the mid-2020’s? Not likely, but there are always those who don’t feel the need to be digitally connected and staring at a smartphone everywhere and anywhere. Having something for phone calls and texts is all many of us really need.
