It was 20 years ago this month, April 2004 the Saskatoon South Downtown Concept Plan held public meetings. Public input forms were also available at city leisure centres, City Hall, Meewasin Valley Authority, and the three Business Improvement Districts, plus the City developed a web page allowing citizens to review the plan and provide input. Additional comments and input were also received through town hall meetings in various core neighbourhoods. From all of this came suggestions for a theme such as using the appeal of the river, eg: River Walk, Riverside, River Run, Rivers Edge, River Bend, Riverside Quay, Riverland, or variations of Riverfront including South Riverfront, Riverfront Stage, Riverfront Bridges, or Downtown Riverfront. Using the significance of our bridges, such as The Bridges, Bridge City Place, Bridge View, Bridge Walk, Bridge Boulevard, or Bridge Point. Using the park as a theme such as Heartland Park, Moriyama Park Centre, Riverfront Park, or Shining Riverfront Park. Using a Cree or other aboriginal word for “Vision”, “Future”, or “Meeting Place”. And using the word “Landing” to capture the historical impact of the site, such as The Landing, Saskatoon Landing, South Downtown Landing, River Landing, Victoria Landing, Barr Landing, or Meewasin Landing. And the winner was…… River Landing.
