There is rain in the forecast for much of Saskatchewan, while many Albertans woke up to snow this morning (Tues). Environment Canada meteorologist Justin Shelley says it began as rain in southwest Alberta and then transitioned to snow overnight. Calgary’s airport reported 5 centimetres overnight, but other areas of the city got 10 to 15 centimetres and in southwest Calgary with the higher terrain, the snowfall was more like 30 to 40 centimetres, and that heavy, wet snow has caused some power outages.
Shelly expects the only possibility for snow in Saskatchewan would be as the system moves further east with cold weather behind it late Wednesday through Thursday. Any accumulations would be in the south central region. Saskatoon may see a dusting of snow if any at all.
Shelley says, “relatively unsettled for the next couple of days through central Saskatchewan, but by the end of the week and over the weekend, it looks like we are going to see conditions improve and temperatures get back up to the mid to high teens by the end of the weekend.” He can’t promise we won’t see any snow in May, noting that the average for Saskatoon is about two to three centimetres in May, as compared to around 8 centimetres in April, so the probability is less , but it’s never quite at zero per cent.
