Saskatoon Police say their Aerial Support Unit (ASU) played a pivotal role in arrests over the weekend.
Around 8:30 p.m. Sunday night police were called about a fight in the 400 block of Confederation Drive. A man was stabbed, and a woman was assaulted but the assailant fled before police arrived. However, a suspect was tracked by the ASU and a 17-year-old was charged with Aggravated Assault. The victim was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
At approximately 11:11 p.m. also on Sunday night, officers were dispatched to a fight in the area of Avenue O and 21st Street West. While police were arriving, ASU tracked a suspect to the 100 block of Ave O South, and say they saw him throw something to the ground which police determined was a sawed-off rifle. The 18-year-old man was arrested and charged with possessing a weapon dangerous to the public, and concealing a weapon, along with a breach of court orders.
And shortly after 1 a.m. this morning (Mon) police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the 100 block of Gibson Bend. Officers tried to pull the vehicle over but it evaded police, so the Air Support Unit followed the vehicle from the air to the airport where the suspects fled on foot. A 25-year-old woman was arrested and charged with multiple offences relating to possession of an uncontrolled substances, theft over $5000 and possession of a weapon.
Just over an hour later, police were called to the 3000 block of 33rd Street West for another stolen vehicle. ASU was able to locate the suspect and vehicle in the 100 block Avenue T South and a 28-year-old was arrested without incident.
