Birth Doulas are used when babies come in to the world and End of Life Doulas can be used when people are ending their life’s journey.
Cindi McAuley is an End-of-Life Doula in the Kenosee area.
She says their duties vary depending on the situation.
Doulas advocate for the best possible experience for the client and family and assist them in creating and carrying out their health care treatment decisions.
Doulas can also provide emotional and physical comfort and an objective viewpoint.
They provide the information needed to make informed care decisions and facilitate communication between client, family and other care providers.
McAuley says the first thing she does is meet with the client and the family to see what the expectations are and to understand what the client wants for end-of-life care.
McAuley is a member of the End-of-Life Doula Registry across Canada as well as the Canadian Hospice and Palliative Care Association.
