The Government of Canada has collectively tossed a few of its marbles aside with their plan to no longer sell anything but electric vehicles by 2035. This concept is so nonsensical it leaves me in a state of disbelief. We don’t live in Toronto, or Montreal, or Vancouver, or Calgary or any of the big cities in Canada. Our biggest city is Saskatoon and there is a whole lot of space and not a whole lot of places in between and betwixt significant communities of size. The sheer impracticality of having only electric vehicles on the road by 2050 takes this concept to the level of absurdity. Nunavut, the Northwest Territories the Yukon – massive areas that are vastly unpopulated in extreme conditions and they’re going to drive electric vehicles? They’re going to charge their vehicle for an hour in Tuktoyaktuk? The insanity of this is mind blowing. I don’t want to drive to see my mother and have to charge the stupid vehicle for an hour to get back home. I don’t want to put an EV charging station in my house. I literally think I hate everything about this. I’m not against electric vehicles per se but my only hope is that a change in government will put the brakes on the madness and introduce a more tempered approach to moving segments of the population, where its practical, to electric vehicles.
Electric vehicles could be great but it’s all in how the concept is deployed
