Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team in investigating a shooting that occurred on the Red Earth Cree Nation on Tuesday.
Carrot River RCMP responded around 3:40 in the morning about a gun being shot on the Cree Nation and found two people who were arrested but haven’t yet been charged. A 25-year-old man was identified as being involved and was located. Police say a gun was shot at patrol vehicles. Officers got out and and altercation occurred. A member of the RCMP discharged their service carbine, striking the man. The man, from Red Earth Cree Nation, was later pronounced dead by EMS at the scene. An officer received non-life-threatening injuries.
SIRT immediately began investigating. Through their search, a shotgun was recovered from the incident scene and has been seized as an exhibit.
SIRT’s investigation will examine the conduct of police during this incident, including the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. No further information will be released at this time. A final report will be issued to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.
