The Canadian Federation of Independant Business did not get the outcome it wanted out of today’s meeting between federal, provincial and territorial finance ministers.
Prior to the meeting, CFIB has stated that the gathering could be an opportunity for the government to announce an extension on the Canada Emergency Business Account payment deadline, which is coming up on January 18th.
Instead, Canada’s Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland says the group discussed building more homes faster, cracking down on short term rentals, and Alberta’s earlier threat to pull out of the Canada Pension Plan.
“Ministers were quite emotional talking about that, because we know that a lot of people are anxious today, and knowing you’re going to get your pension is a huge comfort, and rightly so,” Freeland admitted.
She adds that government officials will be working to figure out exactly how much money the Alberta government would be entitled to if it leaves the CPP. Freeland anticipates this information will not be available for quote some time, as it is a complicated figure to arrive at.
