The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team is currently investigating the death of a woman who was taken into custody by Wilkie RCMP.
Last Wednesday, RCMP were conducting a wellness check at a residence in Wilkie but were unable to locate the subject of the call. After receiving a 9-1-1 call from a different residence, the woman was able to be located.
The 35-year-old was uncooperative with officers, so they used de-escalation techniques to take her into custody under the Mental Health Services Act.
EMS were called to assess her injuries, which are believed to have been sustained prior to her contact with the police. She was then transferred to the Unity Health Centre by ambulance, but 15 minutes into the ride, she went into medical distress and was pronounced deceased.
SIRT officers have since found several knives and a quantity of controlled substances inside her home, and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service will continue to investigate alongside them. SIRT will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the woman’s cause of injury and death.
