Up till now someone seeking mental health help via a help line had to dial a ten-digit number. But as of Thursday 9-8-8 is the number to call or text for Canadians who are in need of immediate mental health crisis and suicide prevention intervention. With 9-8-8 telephone and wireless service providers will direct calls and texts to a mental health crisis or suicide prevention service, free of charge.
The CRTC says the implementation of 9-8-8 as an easy-to-remember three-digit number will help reduce barriers to mental health and suicide prevention resources. Regardless of geographic location or socioeconomic status as it will be available from coast to coast, 24/7 and free of charge. As well, the ability to text to 9-8-8 will ensure that people in crisis who are unable to safely call, or prefer texting, are able to obtain counselling.
The initiative was announced in August 2022 and the launch was scheduled for November 30th, 2023.
The Government of Saskatchewan says this new Suicide Crisis Helpline is for people who are thinking about it or are worried about someone they know. 9-8-8 calls and texts will be directed to a mental health crisis or suicide prevention service and it’s free. Saskatchewan’s Mental Health and Addictions Minister Tim McLeod says, “A three-digit number provides an easy access point for anyone in need of immediate mental health crisis support.”
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is coordinating the service nationally. When someone reaches out to 9-8-8, they will be connected to the responder closest to them, based on their area code, whenever possible. In addition to 9-8-8, children and youth can also continue to contact Kids Help Phone, or text CONNECT for help in a mental health crisis.
