The Federal Conservative Shadow Minister for Agriculture held a news conference in Ottawa Tuesday where John Barlow was calling on the Senate to pass Bill C-234 in its current form. The bill would mean that producers who use propane or natural gas to dry grain, or heat and cool barns and greenhouses, would be exempt from the federal carbon tax. Barlow also introduced several farmers from multiple regions of Canada who outlined their concerns, and they pointed out that the bill isn’t just going to mean tough times for farmers because the cost has to be dispersed somehow so it inevitably, in the long run, will fall to consumers. Barlow says the Liberals were trying to kill Bill C-234 in the senate and bury the news in the fall economic statement. He says they swore in four new senators to ensure they had the votes they need to kill this bill. The debate over the bill was adjourned to today.
