The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team has released a few more details about the police-involved shooting in Estevan Wednesday morning. Around 7:30 that morning, the Estevan Police Service responded to report of a woman with serious injuries. Despite medical treatment, she was pronounced dead and her 19-year-old son was arrested.
He was taken to police headquarters to be processed, but SIRT reports that while he was getting his mug shot, there was a confrontation and he grabbed a police gun, shooting an officer, who was seriously injured. A second officer shot the 19-year-old. Both the officer and the 19-year-old were transported to hospital, but the 19-year old was declared dead that afternoon. River Steele Guillas told DiscoverEstevan.com that the victim was his mother, Karie Anne Guillas/Robinson, and the suspect was his youngest brother, Justice Legend Antoine Guillas.
SIRT’s investigation continues and will examine the actions of police during this incident while Estevan Police will continue to investigate the homicide which led to the initial arrest and the RCMP are investigating the injuries sustained by the Estevan Police officer. A final report will be issued within the next three months.
