It was the same story for the Huskies Women’s Hockey team at Merlis Belsher Place this evening, using another dominant second period where they scored 3 out of their 4 goals on the night with the only difference compared to their first game against Manitoba was goaltender Camryn Drever pitching her first shutout of the season in the 4-0 victory.
Tonight also marked the Huskies Truth and Reconciliation Game, holding a special pregame ceremony and a ceremonial puck drop.
**********
The first period seen back and fourth action for both sides with no great chances and each netminder facing a steady amount of shots well into the second period. The scoreless tie was finally snapped at the halfway point of the game with Jayde Cadieux not only netting her first goal of the season thanks to a beautiful pass from Jessica Patterson, but it was also her first goal as a Huskie.
Taylor Wilkinson would find herself driving the net late in the second and making a beautiful one-handed pass across to Kate Ball netting her third of the season. Shortly after right off an offensive zone face-off, Wilkinson would catch Bisons goalie Megan Relf by surprise squeaking a shot through the five-hole to extend the Dogs lead to 3-0 at the end of the period.
Manitoba would start off the third period with back-to-back power plays but would fail to generate any offence thanks to not only a strong Huskies penalty kill, but strong goaltender from Camyrn Drever to the Huskies lead 3-0. Later in the period Sophie Lalor would find a lose puck and rush in on a 2-on-1 with Taylor Wilkinson, and Lalor fired one home to increase the lead to 4-0, which is where the score would stay until the final buzzer.
The Huskies start the season 2-and-0 and are currently in a first place tie with Mount Royal in a weekend where most matchups resulted in series splits, Saskatchewan was able to put together two early wins on the season and will look for two more on the road next weekend in Grand MacEwan.
