Prairieland Park was busy with suppliers, manufacturers, speakers, and heavy machinery during Saskatchewan’s first ever Construction Expo.
Kevin Dureau and Shannon Friesen, Co-CEO’s of the five construction associations, say that the event is an opportunity for people in the industry across the province to gather, network, and learn, but it is also a celebration of the recently declared Saskatchewan Construction Week, wrapping up Friday.
Dureau says the main message they hoped visitors left with is that anyone can get into construction. He says the field is unique and rewarding, and allows workers to move around, build the province, and overcome challenges each day.
Dureau added that although there are many up-sides to the job, budget challenges and the labour shortage are two of the most prevalent obstacles in the industry right now. Some budgets that are set forth several years prior to use do not take inflation and the future costs of materials into account, making for an inaccurate budget. Friesen says the labour shortage, which effects every industry, makes it even more important for young people to become interested and involved in the career.
