The Rosetown RCMP are alerting the public on an online buying and selling scam. Police say the scammer lists high value items on Facebook for cheap princes and then asks interested buyers to send a deposit or payment to hold the item for pick up. The residents at the address given don’t know the scammer and are unaware of the transaction. The items were never actually available. Rosetown RCMP are working with Facebook to have the scammer’s account banned.
The advice from Saskatchewan RCMP is not to pay or send a deposit for an item you haven’t seen. Don’t give out personal or banking information to the buyer or seller. Take screenshots of the advertisement, the buyer or seller’s contact information and your communications with them. If meeting in person, make sure it happens during daylight hours in a public place with other people around. Inform the buy/sell site of any fraud or suspicious activity, and the final caution from the RCMP: If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. If something seems suspicious, trust your instincts and walk away.
