Just before 6 this morning (Fri), the Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple calls about a house fire in the 1100 block of Osler Street in the Varsity View neighbourhood. Fire crews reported visible flames on the rear of the building when they arrived. Everyone had gotten out before firefighters arrived.
A news release from the Fire Department says crews worked to ensure the fire didn’t extend into the walls, basement or attic and the scene was turned over the the fire investigator by 7:12 a.m. The fire originated on the exterior of the home and the investigator reports that careless disposal of solid fuel barbecue ashes was the cause. The damage estimate is $150,000. The smoke alarms were working, and the fire investigator believes their early warning assisted in helping to alert the occupants, meaning everyone was able to get out safely.
