The federal government is struggling with an excess amount of COVID-19 rapid tests.
An internal Health Canada memo obtained through access-to-information laws shows that there are an extra 39 million rapid tests that have been stocked up since the end of 2021.
Staff don’t wish to throw them in the garbage, but their short shelf-life makes it difficult to do much else. Some suggestions included donating them, giving them to other countries or even paying the manufacturers to take them back.
