More than 26,000 Canadians served on land, at sea and in the air during the Korean War and 516 Canadians died. Today (Thurs) is the 70th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement. On June 25th, 1950 North Korean troops invaded South Korea. United Nations forces joined in to help until armistice was signed in 1953 and Canada was the third largest contributor to the multi-national force.
The Korean War is often called the ‘Forgotten War’ because it was overshadowed by World War II and Vietnam. Veterans Affairs says the Korean War is now recognized as an important chapter in Canada’s military history. A social media post from Veterans Affairs notes that South Korean forest firefighters are in Canada right now to help, which is a reminder or our shared history and friendship.
