After sifting through hundreds of suggestions from the Saskatchewan public, the Saskatchewan Liberal Party has now officially changed their name to the Saskatchewan Progress Party.
Party leader Jeff Walters says the name is timeless, positive, ever evolving, and exactly what Saskatchewan needs in a time when politics are constrained by specific ideologies.
Walters says the name change was voted for in March, followed by a call for suggestion from the Saskatchewan public. After receiving hundreds of suggestions, party members whittled it down to one lucky winner.
He adds that although the party is excited to share the fresh look, the rebrand came at a challenging time. Finding candidates for the three provincial by-elections without having a party name turned out to be challenging. However, he says it will ultimately turn out very well as candidates begin going door to door.
Walters says the shape as well as the colours of the new logo all have meaning, as well. Red represents the party’s history, yellow represents youth and canola fields, and blue symbolizes calmness and the vast prairie sky. The ‘swirl’ symbolizes action and energy that moves forward in a logical fashion.
He hopes that the new name, with more positive connotations, will allow party members to release themselves from metaphorical strait jackets that they felt the party had been stuck into.
