Canada’s Food Professor has broken down what we are paying more, and less for, in the grocery stores since the beginning of the year. Dr. Sylvain Charlebois is with Dalhousie University in Halifax and says since January 2023 tomatoes are down 38 per cent, cucumbers have dropped 31 per cent and strawberries come in third place with an 18 per cent reduction in price. Now the top grocery story price hikes include pork shoulder cuts which his calculations indicate have increased 92 per cent. Grapes come in second costing Canadians 42 per cent more and rounding out the top three are carrots with an increase in cost of 21 per cent since the beginning of the year.
