The Doukhobor Dugout House, a National Historic Site of Canada near Blaine Lake, is now open every Saturday in July with several new activities for visitors to take part in.
Brenda Cheveldayoff, the site founder, says there are 10 areas of historical significance at the site, however a new ‘glamping’ area where visitors can extend their visits and stay overnight has been implemented.
In addition to that, there is now a licensed patio overlooking the river where ethnic Doukhobor foods can be purchased as well as classic Doukhobor bread.
The tours around the site are now self-guided with the help of a map. Cheveldayoff says to tour the entire sites takes several hours.
On July 1st, the theme is Variety of Cultures. All visitors will participate in pulling the Doukhobor plough while wearing the traditional garments of their own culture. Visitors are also welcome to share a part of their own culture with the group such as a song or dance.
